Three is a good age

I like three-year-olds.
We leave California for home-sweet-home in only two days, and what-do-you-know, the sun finally comes out. It was one of those days when the temperature is what it’s going to be in heaven: somewhere in the 70’s, light breeze, comfortable in either short or long sleeves. So, I take the troops on a nice walk to celebrate.
The older two debate how to say the third word in this sign: Not A Through Street. Baby Energizer relaxes in the stroller, not daring to fall asleep. But, it is the three-year-old that keeps me entertained.
“Mama, I want to hold your hand.” Anytime, honey.
“Mama, I bet you’d like to have those flowers if they were on sale.” Does she know her Mom, or what?!
“Mama, you have the bless-you’s.” I wipe my nose and thank the Lord for blessing me.
We pass some markings that used to be on the sidewalk and she notes, “It’s all gone because the rain rained it away.” I’m caught it in the sweetness of the moment but quickly brought back with, “Mama, you need to look both ways when you cross the street.”
The walk ends up covering a few miles over an hour and a half, and I barely want it to end. I’m busy reflecting on how much I enjoy the simplicity of it all, but I’m brought back with, “MOM…[stern face] we took the LONG-cut!”

Our state will be the poorer for losing you, Amy.

My kids talk about the “long-cut,” too. Little ones add to much color to the world.

Come on back to the east coast!!
I just love walks with the little ones. My favorite comment from my just turned 5 year old when we walked to a nearby ice cream store, along a busy road: “Hey Mom we made it! And we didn’t even get killed!”
BTW, we’re still looking forward to the HSC weekend! Can’t wait to meet ya…

I wish you well.
I have linked to your blog by finding it through Challies. If you would rather I did not please leave me a comment and I will remove it.
In Christ.

I like three year olds, too. The best so far, although since my oldest is just three, that might change. Isn’t it just amazing how much fun they can be?
And I’m so excited that y’all are headed back this way! It seems like everybody lives in California (or Alaska!) and I’m lonely over here on the east coast:)

Amy, my dh and I have always said, “What will we do when we don’t have a 3yo anymore. Sadly, that day is almost here. Alex will be 4 on the 14.

Postscript: Today we went for another walk, and she asked, “When will we be home? I’m very, very, very busy.” (This is code for “tired.”) Then she said, “My feet are getting sweating.”

Shannon and Cindy, I don’t know if you have other older children as well, but we have found that each stage gets better, at least as far as 9, which is what our son will be in two weeks [rachel hyperventilates]. (his sister is five). Different, but better. And parents have the bonus of still having all the memories of the earlier years. I do suggest if you’re not already doing it — keep as complete a journal of the “cutenesses” as you can, because it’s alarming how much gets forgotten as they grow.

One On the Church Before Lights Out and a few other things
Maxed Out Mama wrote some things on the reactions to the New Pope and opined on some of the desired changes, and of actual changes seen in the mainstream of the Christian denominations. Basically the question is asked, Why complain…
