Reason #982 why I’m a country girl at heart

On our walk yesterday, I crossed my ducklings at the crosswalk. (I am a law-abiding citizen.) An older woman impatiently tried to make a left-hand turn and inched closer and closer to my ducklings. I corralled my littles, turned around, and quacked, “Can you just WAIT?!”
She made hand gestures, yelled obscenities, and sped off around us.
Country roads don’t have cross-walks and mean folks.

Before you comment, please know that I know the country has mean folks. The country just doesn’t have cross-walks.

Amen. I grew up (and hope to let my children grow up, starting as soon as possible) on roads where you could just walk down the middle, because you could hear a car coming for a mile before it got there, and that only happened maybe four or five times a day anyway, and the road was dirt and the car would only be going about ten miles an hour and the driver would stop to tell you how much the kids had grown.
Now I live in the most urban location I’ve ever lived (edge of a town, population 2000, no traffic lights, but there is ONE Burger King). And my pet peeve is with the opposite problem (mainly because I’ve never had someone do what you did, my goodness how rude): When you stop to let a group of people cross in front of you at a crosswalk and they saunter across without even looking at you, as if it were a red light and not your own courtesy that had made you stop. I teach my children to a) trot across briskly without running and b) wave and smile in a grateful way, when someone stops for us.

Where is that beautiful baby picture? You are very funny to comment in your comments. There are so many psychotic drivers here in Phoenix, it’s just awful.
