My best friends and an Oreo cookie

We’re home from our working trip just in time for the morning-afternoon-all-evening sickness to set in. With every baby that I’ve carried to term, vomiting is just a part of life for several months. Suggesting a couple crackers in the morning is akin to prescribing a Tylenol during labor. It just doesn’t work. I am, however, open to suggestions that haven’t been tried: BRAT diets, regular doses of B6, warm lemon water, Phenergan, Zofran, motion sickness bracelets, high protein diets, and of course, the gingers: ginger ale, gingersnaps, and gingerroot.
There is an herb that I’m willing to try that supports the liver, but I can’t remember the name of it. I believe the information is found in Shonda Parker’s Naturally Healthy Pregnancy, but I don’t own the book.
I mentioned that because I wanted to excuse myself from regular posting and also to tell you about yesterday. After putting the baby down for a nap, I asked the 7, 5, and 3-year-olds to play quietly so that I could get a few minutes of rest. They played nicely and after an hour or so, I awoke to a (somewhat) clean and quiet house. They told me to go back and lay down so that they could make me some lunch.
I graciously agreed, knowing that my oldest knows that I like mayonnaise and mustard on my sandwich.
Here’s what they brought me:
I didn’t even know that we had that much junk in the house. What’s more, they didn’t even “test” anything out beforehand; it was all for me. (Though, I did ask for help in eating the presentation.) My stomach doesn’t feel that great, but my heart is just fine.

MMmm, what a yummy, and sweet, lunch!!
I wish I had some tried and true advice on battling pregnancy-sickness but I don’t. I just suffered through unaware of all the remedies one so often hears about now. I have heard of the ginger-types the most often but when while one will swear it worked for her, another will say it did nothing.
I hope you feel better soon:-)

Well, here are a few ideas I found in my pregnancy book. Not saying they’ll work, but here goes…Eat often. When your stomach is empty acids have nothing to digest but the stomach’s own lining. This can trigger nausea. So can low blood sugar…Get extra sleep and relaxation (yeah, right)…Greet the morning in slow motion. Rushing aggravates nausea…Minimize stress…
Well, as I look back over that advice, it seems pretty lame. Most of it is no-brainer information and very difficult to carry out. But it’s all I could find other than what you’ve already tried.
I will pray for you, however. I, too, am newly pregnant with my ninth child. (Or actually my tenth. I lost a baby on New Year’s Day through miscarriage.) I am about 6 or so weeks along and feeling a bit nauseous and very tired, but I will no longer feel sorry for myself after hearing of your sickness. I rarely have more than a queasy feeling.
Congratulations! Just keep thinking, “One more precious child to add to this wonderful bunch that God has already blessed us with!”

Milk thistle is the herb she recommends (I just got the book from someone on the MOMYS group - it’s great). She says…”milk thistle (standardized to contain at least 70% to 80% silymarin) - invaluable in preventing morning sickness. I began taking 2 tablets each day two months prior to this pregnancy and increased to 3 tablets daily when our pregnancy was confirmed. Milk thistle is liver supportive and protective…this would be especially helpful for those moms who vomit bile during pregnancy.”
I really sympathize - the nausea is my very least favorite part of pregnancy. I had it BAD the last two times, but so far (PTL!) it hasn’t been as bad this time.
You sure have wonderful kiddies (although seeing that much sugar would have sent me running for a place to be sick) and it sounds like you’ve trained them well to be understanding when mommy feels badly. I’m going to start really working on that this time with my two. Levi already comes in the bathroom behind me saying “it’s okay, it’s okay. You’re allright mommy.” It’s sweet, but hard to respond to in the midst of being sick:)
Hope you find something that works well for you!

Oh Amy - just too sweet! What is the sweetest I think is that they gave you things that they probably consider the best treats because they knew you needed a treat. I love when we can see their spirits growing and exhibiting the fruit of the Spirit!

Yep its Milk Thistle. Have you heard of B6/Unisom? I’m going to try that next time, God willing. I used Rainbow Light Prenatals and loads of protein with our last go round and Rainbow Light was the first true prenatal I could stomach. I also ate almost constantly during the day. Carrot Sticks between meals were helpful.
I couldn’t brush my teeth for a while last time but found that rinsing with a strong listerine was ok. Had no cavities. I remember lying in bed thinking I Had to go brush and feeling SO sick just thinking of it! YUCK!
Anyway, I’m glad you aren’t feeling well! I know you know what I mean! And it will pass. Praying for you and yours!

Amy,
Unisom is the same as Benadryl which I have used successfully during my last 5 pregnancies (#2 - #6). I use the liquid. It doesn’t taste great BUT it works faster and I can take as little as necessary. What thoughtful children you have! Of course we all recognize thoughtfulness in children as the product of careful parenting. Blessings on your house.

In the last trimester of my third pregnancy I discovered ReliefBands. I was doubtful that it would work on my “morning sickness” (who came up with that name anyway?!?) but it worked fabulously! I could actually function through out the day. I definately recommend you give it a try.

What precious kids you have. Talk about service and love in action…
As for the upset stomach (that’s quite the understatement isn’t it?), my sister swore by Atomic Bombs - you know those red hot, cinnamon jaw breakers. I have no idea if they really work or if they just burn your mouth so bad it takes your mind off your stomach…either way, I do hope you’re feeling better quickly and that the “sick” months fly by…

Alright, Amy, this time around, I’m doing much better. (Did you notice that subtle announcement of #7?) I feel like Arnold Swarzeneggar announcing on the Leno show.
I have worked on building the body up over the last year, and I think it has made a real difference. Regarding the high protein diet…you have to eat BEFORE you want to. Don’t ever go past that point where the nausea even sets in. I eat yogurt with raw almonds to stabalize blood sugar right before bed, and I get up early, scarf a boiled egg, then hop back in bed before I hurl. I sleep another hour or so, then when it is time to get up, I am usually feeling better. I eat more protein once I am up…I’m still queasy, but not too bad. I really can’t say that I have a balanced diet right now…but that is secondary to me for a few weeks or even months. I just need to function. I’m pretty much just eating protein…everything else sounds gross. You must understand…through 6 pregnancies I have been flat on the couch at this point. I haven’t been there once, yet, with this one! Maybe it would work for you, too!

I sure understand the pregnancy nausea. I usually lose 20 lbs. my first 3-4 months of pregnancy, and generally weigh less after having the baby than my before pregnancy weight. The bad part, it does not stay off after having the baby, and nursing does NOT make ME lose weight! Sighhhh….. Anyway, I too have done the Unisom with Vit. B6 and it did help me. Also, lemon in water seemed to help. Another pregnancy “Big Red” gum helped! I had to take the pheneragan suppositories when I was pregnant with my twins and I was extremely sick and did help some. But rest and taking it easy did help too. It certainly is worth it when that babe is in your arms. I’ve done it 11 times!

Ooops . . . and an additional comment here. For me too, the three babies I miscarried I was not sick at all. So, the sickness is a “blessing” for me, which is my reassurance for the baby to stay. It certainly is not “morning sickness” but ALL DAY PREGNANCY SICKNESS!

Bagels and cream cheese in the evening. It worked every time with me. I’ve never been sick with any of my six. I gained weight but it beat getting sick.

Thanks, everyone, for the tips. Unisom is something I haven’t tried yet…but how in the world would an already tired lady keep her eyes open after taking that?!? [Unisom is the help-you-sleep drug, right? I've heard about antihistamines helping with nausea, and drowsiness is a side effect of Phenergan.] Perhaps it’s something I can keep in mind when the kids are older, but right now… I think I’ll try the AtomicBombs. Yeah, I like the idea of your mouth burning so bad that your stomach is tricked out of vomiting. Plus, I just like those firey things, and it might provide a (very) little hydration. Too, I followed the link to the Relief Bands, and it looks a little more high-tech than the pressure point bands that I tried earlier. You know, even if it didn’t work, I can see how someone can make good money from that—desperate pregnant women looking for anything different. I bet you could sell purple silk shoes for nausea (for a little while anyway) because a sick pregnant lady is desperate to try anything.
Comment by Amy (July 7, 2005 @ 11:19 am )
I took the unisom before going to bed - and hour or so before. I do know some moms who’d also take it during the day but don’t know either how I’d make it through the day being I needed 2 or 3 naps anyway! LOL! But might be worth considering at night.

Hello Amy, I hope you feel better soon. Like one of the other ladies said, the sicky feeling tells me that the baby is doing well and here to stay. A few weeks ago my oldest,6, took it upon himself to fix breakfast and lunch for himself, his two brothers, and me. We had toast, regular and cinnamon, and peanut butter and jelly with sliced strawberries. The kids are such a blessing. I am in week 16 and finally feeling a bit better. I’ll be praying for you. God bless.

Amy, the title of your post is just precious! You are very blessed
I have no advice but I offer you my prayers. Take care.

Congratulations on the new baby! I am 19 weeks along and have had “morning sickness” (all-day, anytime sickness, actually) this whole pregnancy. BUT, my doc put me on the Unisom with B-6 and it TRULY has worked! I only take half a pill because I hate feeling dependent on meds. I only take them at night. My doc warned against taking them in the day!
May God bless you!

Now you know what children under 7 really want for lunch! Maybe I should splurge and let them get that nasty smiley-face, chocolate pancake at IHOP, or is that Denny’s? Anyway - congratulations on your wee one! Prayers for your sick tummy.
Comment by Heather (July 9, 2005 @ 12:33 am )
Unisom left me drugged all day (and I took it at night); it might work differently for different folks, but I don’t know if I’d use it again.
Protein has made a huge difference for me in the past. A high protein snack before bed and then someone bringing me a protein snack before I lift my head off of the pillow REALLY tricks my body. Of course, the snack has to be pre-approved by me: if it’s something that is nasty (read: gross within THIS pregnancy), then I’m heading for the bowl regardless.
I also like a lemon drop or something sweet in the morning. Again, before my head is off the pillow (I literally cannot turn over in bed once I’m awake - it’s a sure-fire way to be sick). Then as soon as I can get up, I quickly get protein into me. The sugar makes your blood-sugar levels sky-rocket (no surprise there…I’m thinking of trying M&Ms or Reeses Pieces next pg!!), and then you have to get the protein in you REALLY fast, or your levels will drop to the floor just as fast…then you’re a gonner.
Blessings on you…sounds like you’ve got your children wonderfully trained. They’ll be so helpful to you during this pg. Congratulations.

I struggled with awful morning sickness until I stopped using flouride toothpaste. I don’t know if one led to the other, but it may be worth a try! Years later I still don’t use flouride toothpaste, still have never had a cavity, and still don’t get morning sickness (as bad). I’m not going back now! In any case, I hope you feel better. Congratulations!

I agree that there is a link between having a strong pregnancy and being sick. With my first child, I had enough morning sickness for it to be “cute”. Something to talk about, but nothing really. I almost lost her about eight weeks into the pregnancy. I was on bedrest for a couple of months until the placenta finally found a place it was happy with in my uterus.
I was so sick with my second child that I was almost hospitalized. I lost a great deal of weight and couldn’t eat or drink anything. Everything smelled horrible. And I mean everything. I ended up on Zofran. It only helped me to avoid actually throwing up. I still walked around feeling like was going to throw up any minute. I was sick like this for almost the entire nine months. When I would try to go off the Zofran, I was in the bathroom all day. All I can say is for you to find something you can eat and drink and go for it. Anything is better than nothing. I found that I could tolerate rootbeer and rootbeer lollipops or candies. I don’t know why and I know it wasn’t healthy, but I was getting some carbs and liquid in me. That lollipop site looks interesting. Just the sight of the book What To Eat When You’re Expecting made me run for the bathroom. Yuck! In the end, though, I ended up having a 10 lb. 3 oz. baby girl.

Hi–
I had four babies and was sick for the full nine months every time.
Some things that workd for me–
(1) Know what my peak sick times were (for instance 4 p.m.) and eat about 15 minutes before that time. I usually had graham crackers and Nestles’ Quik.
(2) Keep my liquids up–I usually chose to drink rather than eat. Two things that I could usually deal with were either ruby red grapefruit juice or cranberry juice CUT IN HALF with plain club soda and served over a lot of ice.
(3) Often my hunsband would get up and fix me an egg in the morning (fried over hard with the yolk broken). He put a lot of salt on it. It took a lot to get it down, but if I could start the day with this protein burst, the rest of the day would usually go better than average.
Good luck. It’s nothing nine months won’t fix. I’ll never forget how starved I was when my first baby was finally out. They were still stitching me up, and I was fantasizing about a big, meaty meal–the first real hunger pangs I’d had in nine months!

Wow Amy! Your getting a lot of comments on this one. I guess you bring up something like “morning sickness” and we all have something to say. My baby sis announced yesterday that she is expecting her second blessing. WhooHOO! They’ve been trying for nearly 2yrs now. On all my pregnancies my morning sickness not only lasted the whole 9 months but the two weeks following delivery as well. Ugg that definately was frustrating! We’re unable to having anymore so our family has stopped at 3 little ones, I guess the positive side of that is no more morning sickness.

try peppermint tea- it worked great against nausea in my last pregnancy. I brought it with me everywhere. It tastes great and it’s cheap- definately worth a try
