The best salsa
Friday, Jun 2, 2006
This salsa was a hit at a recent Memorial Day party. My tomatoes are still producing, even with the 90 degree weather. It’s because they’re in part shade, I think. I will begin another batch this summer in the filtered shade and see what happens.
Salsa for onion averters
Several tomatoes diced (ditch the larger clumps of seeds)
As much fresh garlic as you can handle, minced
Green chilies (fresh, but canned if you must)
Green onions
Dash of lime juice
Large batch of cilantro
Little salt and pepper
Some ground cumin to taste
Extra virgin olive oilProcess some of it if you like it runny. Let it chill several hours before serving to blend flavors.
Like sandwiches, salsa is a very personal thing. I don’t like raw onions, but I found that green onions are a good substitute. I don’t believe I’m missing any good thing from this recipe.
Just a side question— Why do all the men hang around the grill when there’s only one set of tongs? If it weren’t for the chip bowl, they’d never come inside. I’m just asking.

Hey, thanks for the recipe–I just posted one too! Here in Chicagoland, we’re just putting out our tomatoes, but I’ll remember this when I’m rolling in them. We love fresh salsa. I’ll definitely try the green onions–I think my family will like that.
Great to see the photo of YOU (at the convention) on your blog!

Why do men hang around the bbq? probably because we hope to learn what we are doing wrong around our own, at least that is waht I do.
I have never tried the green onions instead in salsa. is the taste any different? I love the cilantro and thing that without it a salsa just is not a salsa but my wife is not a fan of the taste.
One more thing. The salsa that we buy in stores is nothing like this recipe and I am wondering why you can never find this kind of salsa in the stores instead of the Pace picante sauce type.

Bill,
I know what you mean, I can’t stand that Pace Picante stuff. You can find fresh salsa in the produce section near the fresh herbs or near the refrigerated veggie slices, or the precut fruit that is in containers. It is sometimes referred to as Pico de Gallo. It has chopped tomatoes, white onions and cilantro with spices. Pretty good stuff. Comes in real handy for me when I want to make a really really fast dinner like chicken quesidillas using leftonver chicken. I grab a container of the fresh salsa and dinner is ready in literally minutes.

I just planted my very first tomato garden this week. I’m not much of a green thumb. Lord willin’ I’ll have enough tomatoes turn out to make salsa!!!! I like your recipe. I planted cilantro too this year in my herb garden so I’ve got that covered.

I love your website, Amy. Thank you for writing so honestly and with such great wit. We love it here, even Down Under!
Not sure why the men stand around the grill, but I read a very funny take on men doing the grill in order to give the woman a ‘night off’ from cooking. Thought you might find it amusing too.

Yes, you get the onion flavor without the oniony crunchy “bite.” Green onions don’t give you onion breath either. That’s enough, isn’t it?!
