Life With Three Under Three - #3

I moved this comment by Lora Lynn to the top because she’s brilliant. She captures the whole thing perfectly—life with little ones— with her laundry game. She totally gets it:
I don’t have time to wait till mine are four to make them put away their own laundry. My twins are not 3 yet and I’ve already taught them this task. I got three big galvanized buckets from IKEA. I labeled them with pictures of pants, shirts, and pj’s. Once they learned the system, I use laundry time as a way to get out little boy energy.
They take their clothes upstairs, one or two pieces at a time. After five trips up and down the stairs, they’ve burned a few wiggles. I’ve now taught them to help me put away my own laundry by showing them which are mommy and daddy’s sock and underwear drawer. They have races to and from the drawers as they put away each item INDIVIDUALLY. That part is key for me. Putting away laundry (a task I hate) and burning some energy.
I like how she combines work and play. She turns work into a game. All my kids go bonkers for our “30-second Pick Up.” This is where I countdown (slowly) aloud from 30. With four of them scampering about, our family room is presentable in 30 seconds—even the floor schmutzies are up.
Since the Bible teaches that all of life is worship (I Cor. 10:31), we ought to live with God’s glory in mind in whatever we do. Work and play; play and work. There are plenty of opportunities to bear one’s cross, but in the instances where we can make some lemonade, we should. Have some fun.

I agree! I love this idea! I will try using it with my younger 2! My 4 year old does put all her clothes away…but we need to work on it with the 2 year old and her(the 4 year old) a little more.
Thanks for the idea!

Amy,
Your “30 second game” is sort of like what we did when I was little. We would set a timer for thirty second or a minute and take turns putting things away and we would get “points” for each thing. My family has always been very competitive (a very bad thing is some peoples oppinion) so it made us work extra hard to get as many things done in our time. Of course, there has to be pretty big mess for there to be enough stuff to keep taking turns.

I do the exact same thing with my two youngest! My 18 month old loves to put away his clothes, and tries to fold them too.

We do the “ten minute tidy”. You get a little more out of them in 10 minutes

Brilliant ideas! I love things like this and am soaking up the ideas for future reference. I’m single, no kids, but come from a big family and want kids! I have, however, found with my siblings that if I can ‘brainwash’ the littles into thinking work is fun…you’ve got it made.

Actually, the other thing I learned is to make sleeping/naptime fun. We used to travel 1.5 hours to church (years ago) and I would start competitions as to who could go to sleep first. Whoever won would get a peppermint when they woke up. Yes, it worked. Or if I was babysitting and they would insist on not being tired, I would tell them to try their real-hardest and promise that if they were still awake when I came back I’d let them get up–but only if they tried real hard. You know, I don’t ever remember having to let anybody out of bed!

Amy, I am really loving your insightful ideas for life with lots of kids. My oldest is 11, not quite so crazy as back when..but they can make a mess all being homeschooled. I love your 30 second pick-up, how fun!

We do something similar…except it is a “Count” pick up… I throw out a number…. “7 count pick up” or “21 count pick up” and they all go get and put away the specified number of items– things left out on the floor, on the table, in the room etc.
I explain how working together as a group can accomplish a lot of work in a short amount of time… With nine people picking up 10 things each…. 90 things get put in their proper place in very short time!

I’ve put the folding table into the boys room (there is room for it so this works). This makes it easy for putting clothes away. The two boys that wear the same size share clothing ‘bins’ (like what the orginal poster was refering to). One bin is for tops, one for bottoms and one is for pjs. It’s great to have the place for sorting through laundry in the same area where the majority of items will be put away. In the past when I had a nursing baby or big belly I’ve moved the place for storing sheets and towels to the area where all laundry was sorted and or folded. Towels were just rolled and put into a big wicker basket and sheets weren’t folded just put on a shelf (top sheets on one shelf and bottom sheets on another). Pillow cases went into an oversized see threw plastic bag in the same area. I just love tips that help make life simpler. I remember feeling a twinge of guilt over my laudry putting away process when I went over to my coworkers (we are missionaries) house and say her IRONING AND FOLDING KIDS UNDERWARE!!! Thankfully my envy quickly turning into pity for my friend To spend so much time on laundry only means taking away precious time for the more important things.

My children are grown- 2 and 1 almost that is. My children always helped me work. I have to find the picture- somewhere I have picture of my youngest 18mos folding his own diapers. They aren’t folded as neat as I would but he is having fun and I had help. ( :
