Guidance

I beseech you therefore, brethren, by the mercies of God, that ye present your bodies a living sacrifice, holy, acceptable unto God, which is your reasonable service.
And be not conformed to this world: but be ye transformed by the renewing of your mind, that ye may prove what is that good, and acceptable, and perfect, will of God. ~Romans 12:1-2
This verse is on my mind today. I figure that a lot of life’s problems could be solved simply by putting ourselves at the mercy of God, giving ourselves wholly to Him. We have to settle once and for all that there is nothing “off limits” to God, and then we have to do it again each day.
There are times that I wonder, “What’s the answer here?” (What’s the will of God in this matter?) In A Lamp For My Feet, Elisabeth Elliot reminds us, “We hold certain reservations about how far we are willing to go, what we will or will not do, how much God can have of us or of what we treasure. Then we pray for guidance. It will not work.” Now I know why!

This flows so beautifully with another thing of which God has recently been convicting me: trying to do anything in my flesh. Living the Spirit Filled Life is about understanding that we can’t do it in our own flesh and we need to rely on Him every single moment, from the smallest things to the biggest things. Moment by moment surrender is the only way we can live a victorious life in Christ.
Thanks for the encouragement!
Blessings,
Angel

I needed this reminder this morning, Amy. Thanks for the encouragement/exhortation to give myself wholly to Him all over again today.

Thank you. I have been reading through your posts and archives while I have a neck problem and can do very little around my house. My husband took three of my children to visit his family while I try to recover - just me and the baby. It has been so refreshing to read what you have had to say. What a blessing to me as I have been spending time in prayer in what God has for me to learn through this!
Anyway, I have GOT to read more from Elisabeth Elliot than the one book I have read. Any suggestions? I read Passion and Purity a long time ago. But that’s it.

Brooke, I’ve just been enjoying “Secure in the everlasting arms” by Elisabeth Elliot which is a great collection of short reflections of hers (taken from her newsletters over the years) on God’s love and our security in him. I found it especially encouraging on trusting God and thanking him when you feel frustrated or overwhelmed by life’s circumstances. Her testimony of trusting God through seeming disaster and through good times too is very insightful. I also enjoyed it because each thought is only a few pages long, so it’s accessible even when you’re busy. Highly recommended! (I should add I’m in the UK and I bought it here, but I guess you could get it on the internet.)

Brooke, Kate offers a good recommendation. My favorite is Through Gates of Splendor, which is the telling of the story that EE is most known for.

You can go to Elisabeth Elliot’s website : http://www.elisabethelliot.org/ for her books and a daily devotional….also transcripts of her radio broadcasts are on Back to the Bible…click the link on her website for the transcripts…I’m a huge fan of EE too…I’d say buy any of her books you can find…her years are limited on this earth and her books may likely be difficult to obtain in the years to come. I’ve found several of her books at local Christian book stores and in Books A Million and Barnes and Noble in the devotional/Christian Living section.
