Terminology

Greg preached in a church last Sunday that had two morning services. That’s code for “a church with nice landscaping.” Our church is humble, and the seats really need to be cleaned. We love it.
I didn’t go– not because I already heard his sermon like three times already– but because it was a ten-hour-day, and that’s not my idea of a Sabbath. Greg took along two of our children. Now, my oldest boy liked the church because they had “donut time” and the three-year-old had a swell time as well. She liked riding the “alligator.”
She meant the “elevator,” but this is Florida so you never know.
Adults often mix up their words as well. I think about this whenever anyone tells me about their home improvement stories. They know I love them. What they don’t know is that I’m listening for key words like “remodel” and “redecorate.”
A few years back a woman was lamenting her horrid kitchen “remodeling” project. I asked her what was involved, and she went on about the paint colors and the wallpaper boarder she was trying to hang. I kept waiting for the part where the stove blows up, but it never happened. What kind of story was this anyway? I tried my best to show sympathy.
Meanwhile back at the ranch in 2004… our kitchen ceiling is torn out, there are no functional cabinets, and every nut and bolt from The Home Depot is lying on every available surface. You didn’t dare stay stationary or you’d be used as a drywall perch. If you turned on the faucet, the water would pour on your head from the ceiling. There was white dust in the depths of the upstairs toy box even though the kitchen is downstairs.
If the wallpaper lady could see me now. I mean, we had a toddler that still put stuff in her mouth. I’ll leave out the “…and I was pregnant” part, because that’s a given.
Anyway, I’d like to take a minute to clarify. Ripping out a wall is remodeling. White-washing the 70’s wood-paneling is redecorating. There’s about a 10 Advil difference.
This all comes to mind as we consider old farmhouses and abandoned barns. Some folks tell me that things need “a little redecorating,” and some folks tell me that it needs an overhaul.
There is a difference, and trust me, I have a preference for one over the other.

My husband and I are having this very discussion right now as the contents of my kitchen are in boxes in the living room. We’ve eaten out or eaten microwaved quesadillas every meal for the last week. Paint, new light fixtures, maybe even new countertops I could handle again. But no kitchen and a house of chaos for weeks, no thank you.

Amy I had to leave a note for this post!! My dh and I moved in with his brother the fall after we graduated from college to help him remodel a house to resell. What a nightmare!! Three years later we finally bought our own house, but all that was in our price range also needed a LOT of remodeling. As I type my dh is reassembling the drain to install a new tub, having ripped out the shower Saturday morning and the old tub Sunday afternoon—because the tile was falling off the wall, because the plaster had disintegrated, because the caulking was leaking. So I haven’t washed my hair since Saturday morning, my little ones (2.5 & 1) are having a field day with Daddy’s tool box, and there are tile chips and dust everywhere. But you know what? It’s a home of our own, and such a blessing!
I definitely hope that our next house will need less work though. This is only the latest in a long series of projects since we moved in.

I have to say, that’s hilarious! I’m with you on the terminology. Those two words, particularly. Remodeling requires a lot more toil!
‘Kinda like casserole and hotdish.
Okay, maybe not.

Amy, I know you are the popular kid in school and I’m in the Math Club, but I went out on a limb and chose you for The Blogger Reflection Award. Check my blog for details.

Hi Amy,
I’ve never commented before, but this post spurred me on. We have done LOTS of home remodeling projects. The first house we bought was so bad the bank wouldn’t even give us a loan until we had fixed it up - it had be to fixed even to bring it to the level of a fix-it-upper! My two year old daughter knew the name of every tool in the toolbox and could fetch them for her dad. My mom was nearly in tears as she drove away from helping us move in. Our homes have needed less and less work each time, but still we have done major projects - refinishing the basement that used to be used as a slaughterhouse for chickens
Not as bad as it sounds, really. We redid ( kind of between a remodel and a redecorate
the kitchen of our current house. We had an 8ft counter top we were putting in. I was holding it up while my husband ran outside for something. He called me, so I asked my oldest daughter (12 at the time) to hold it. She, in turn, asked her 8yo sister to take over as holder-of-the-counter. Next thing we know there is a loud crash as the counter plummets to the floor. Thankfully it only knocked her shoulder on the way down. The kicker, if there needs to be another one, is that the 8yo was on the phone talking to my mom (ergo, holding the counter with one hand) at the time the counter came crashing down. Needless to say, my mom is begging us to move into a brand new home next time we move! I’ll try not to leave such a long comment next time. Blessings as God leads you to the house He has for you.

Yes, I totally understand the difference! Since moving in 3 years ago, we have taken out 2 load bearing walls, (replaced with LVLs), ripped down the plaster and lath ceiling in the kitchen and dining room (replaced with dry wall), finished a 16×21 room that only had the studs, a cement floor, the original back porch in closed in the room (the house is 100 years old) and the rafters showing. We have also torn down the plaster and lath in the quest room (all 4 walls and the ceiling, replaced with dry wall)and last August till December we gutted our upstairs, 2 bedrooms and the hallway, all the way down the the floor joise (leveled the joise, new sub floor, new hard wood flooring and everything else).
But we did redecorate the upstairs bathroom, the kitchen walls and I’m currently changing my wash room.
So, yeah, I understand the difference. BTW, I HATE mudding and taping. I also hate plaster dust. Oh, nasty stuff! But I still love to paint.

Thanks all for commiserating with me! (Connie, thank you so kindly, but I am NOT cool!)
Laura,
Can you send it through the contact form? I’ll let you know if I get it or not. I’ve noticed, too, that the contact form doesn’t always work. Sorry about that! Technology!

When we moved to the house we currently live in, I had dreams of remodeling the entire thing. Only problem was, I was counting on my husband to have the same, or more, motivation, to get it done, since he had to do the work. (I am always pregnant.) He has long given up giving the whole house a makeover, settling for new living and front rooms, and new countertops. I’d love to say a new bathroom is in our future, but no money and no hubby-labor make that impossible. And, I wouldn’t want to have to ‘go’ at the neighbor’s house all the time it was out of commission, anyway. (I am always pregnant.)
Learning to love the fifties gold toilet,
Valerie

I like the ‘we’ll leave out the pregnant part’ very funny! Happy Independence day from Ireland!

Very funny!
We are currently in the process of moving. My husband is at the new house right now doing some “redecorating.” LOL! And of course, I have lots of plans for our new house, to bad my husband isn’t on the same page. He just wants to get in there. But he is patiently scrubbing all the walls down for me.
And we can’t forget that I am a very large 8 months pregnant…as usual during times of upheaveal…lol!
Thanks for the chuckle!

Too, too funny! We too are remodeling a bathroom…a gut job to the studs…plus as of last night, I could see down into the basement, so this project counts! The kitchen floor is up too and getting all new tile…this one is sort of a grat area.
You are hillarious, and I needed a c huckle, so kudos to you!

I wish I couldn’t relate.
I wish I weren’t headed back into a house overhaul. But I am. And of course, I am always pregnant too. No change there.
My worse remodel story involves a tri-level house, with ALL three bathrooms torn out during a plumbing overhaul. Throw in a potty training two year old, the flu for the entire family, and a Mommy who is 8 months pregnant. Oh. Company coming in less than a week, too.
((SHUDDER))
I never want to go thru that again.

Ahem.
My WORST remodel story….
I am such a poor speller lately.
Comment by Holly (July 4, 2007 @ 8:09 pm )
Too funny about the “remodling”! My husband and I have been looking at investment houses a long time and always run into the “yes, it only needs a little redecorating, or updating”. Which, of course is why the sellers are asking prices close to what it would be when the work was all done.
When we get inside the house, we find out that what the sellers really mean is “I hope you brought a match & some gasoline because it will be cheaper to burn it down and start over!” Every. Single. Time.
Take Care,
Trixie

I chuckled at your son’s donut comment. Having recently relocated and been faced with finding a new church, donuts have become an important part of how each church rates…in our kid’s eyes at least. When we asked one ds what he thought of his experience at Church X, he replied, “It was OK. I liked my class, but they didn’t have any donuts.”

just avoid the farms whose listings include any of the following euphemisms:
1. Vintage Charm
2. Rustic Appeal
3. Laura Ingalls Wilder would have LOVED it!!

I am so over remodeling! I can barely get up the energy to redecorate, and I mean changing the dusty stuff on the mantle. I may need to get pregnant just so the nesting urge visits me. My house needs a nester.
Comment by Kathy/ Lessons from the Laundry (July 5, 2007 @ 3:57 pm )
Good grief. You guys are wimps. Marry a contractor. That’s “remodeling”.
Comment by kerri (July 5, 2007 @ 8:45 pm )
A long time ago my husband and I bought a house without ever having been inside (it had been boarded up for 5 years). The thought was that if we didn’t like where the walls were we’d change them
And we did have to - it had been made into a two unit and we converted it back to one. We could stand in the attic and look all the way through to the basement because of water damage. That’s an “overhaul”
