Unplugged

I’ve been unplugged since my last entry. Now, when I say “unplugged,” I really mean it. We closed on our property last week. It is an older Amish house on 54 acres, so we were without electricity and water. Going without electricity wasn’t bad at all, it was a lack of water that made things difficult. Even the Amish have a water source, but ours wasn’t hooked up yet. More on that later, though. After we regroup over here, I’ll give an update, details, and pictures. For now, I’m really busy flipping our kitchen sink on and off, on and off.

What a beautiful sign!!!!! We want to sing “My Old Ky Home” every time we come home from a trip. That’s a requirement you know, even if you have to hum part of it.

Amy, very funny about your kitchen sink.
Tracy from KY, I am a northerner who moved to Kentucky 8 years ago. I have to admit, I wasn’t real thrilled about moving to this state. Now, when “My Old Kentucky Home” is sung at the Kentucky Derby, my eyes well up with tears. Who would of thunk it?

Flipping your kitchen sink? Mine doesn’t do anything but lay there and collect water! And occasionally a pan that needs soaking.

I know the woes of being without water quite well. Old houses do have their quirks and in 2 1/2 years of living in here, I’ve been without water (especially in the kitchen) many times. Just 2 weeks ago, a backhoe dug a big hole outside my window to replace a section of pipe that a very thirsty tree root had broken. Every time we have to shut off the water we think to ourselves again that we should rehabilitate the cistern and well on the property.
For future reference, you can wash dishes in two 5 gallon buckets or storage totes (one soapy, one clear water) on the back porch. Bottled water by the sinks allows people to brush teeth. Instant hand sanitizer in each bathroom too. This is important- a pitcher of water (from the 5 gallon bucket you fill from someone’s hose or at the gas station) will allow you to flush the toilet! If you have a kiddie pool out back that is full when you have to turn off the water line, that is useful for watering animals or flushing the toilets too.

wow Amy, how exciting!! I dream sometimes of getting some land…but I know deep down I am a wimp!! We’ll see, who knows? Hubby wants to keep bees, so far we think the homeowner’s assoc. would frown on that…
what a great adventure, what a neat way for your kids to grow up!! I am looking forward to hearing more about your whole adventure and seeing pictures.

Where in Kentucky? We drove through it on I-75 on our way to FL last May, and I was struck by all its rolling beauty. How exciting to find your dream homeste!ad after all your diligent and patient care and searching!

Oh, how eery! I recognized some of the people from that picture you linked to! I think I might know where you’re moving. Some of our dearest family friends live just across the road from Misti Konsavage, and I’ve heard them talk about the Petersons. Are you moving near them? (refraining from posting town name)

Goodness. Again, your journey sounds so much like ours.
We “camped” in our old/new house for a week before several things were functional. I was SO thankful for my washer/dryer!
We don’t have 50 plus acres, however. Maybe next time!

I considered trying to keep some privacy by refraining posting our new location, but then I realized that we want to SELL PEOPLE FRESH FOOD and we want them to come to us to buy it eventually. I will post our location after we get up there, which should be sometime early 2008. We are beginning the process of rehabbing (or rather, “habbing”…)the house.
Yes, the Konsavages and Petersons are not a bad drive from us. The Konsavages hosted us to sleep one evening, and the Petersons had us for dinner. We are blessed to have good neighbors in place already–and we met even more this trip as well. More on that later.

I did not want to ask where either, yet God seems to be calling us to every place called Marion…………..it is a family name. We traced it back to Francis Marion who is very well known in SC his home. The movie the Patriot was based on him in part. All of my father’s family are Henry Marion. South Carolina……….Georgia and now my husband finds Marion Kentucky? God is tell us something………many Amish/Mennonite neighbors which is very cool for our family. We have Amish/Mennonite friends in Lancaster PA…….no Marion PA…..please do not Goggle Marion PA my husband will check it out………..nah, it is too cold for us!!
Congratulations Amy…….I dreamed last night that I had a home birth last night TRIPLETS!! All done by C-Section, which did not hurt. I was up walking in 15 minutes with no stitches. Two boys, Aidan, Violet and Daisy………I have a Lily…..how strange and vivid. I have been praying for your birth and peace for your heart.
