Night launch
Thursday, Oct 11, 2007

Last night’s Atlas 5 launched on schedule carrying a military communications satellite. The children and I had a great view from our balcony, but as usual, Greg’s view is better.
So after all these years, I thought up this brilliant joke, “So Greg, do you ever say to anyone at work, ‘Hey, this isn’t rocket science?’” Um, not really.
I can usually make a good joke at least once a day, but I’m having an off week.

I’m sure your view was great. Recently, my kids have been showing a lot more interest in driving over to see a launch. That’s a good picture, by the way. As for your joke, it wasn’t that bad-really.

I thought the joke was very funny! I’ll be giggling about it all evening!
Hugs,
Carmen

(Sound of me snorting milk through my nose at joke.)

My husband, who is a scientist (but not a rocket scientist), is known to say “this isn’t rocket science!” about something at least once a day. Today we were talking about making pot holders on a loom, and even I had to blurt out, “It isn’t rocket science!” Just thought you’d like to hear how we mock your husband’s profession (or are we elevating it?) on a daily basis.

Nice photo. You’re that close?!
We’ll be travelling to FL in Febraury, when the next shuttle launch is scheduled, and hope to see it. (We’re studying astronomy this year in homeschool, and won’t our evaluator and superintendant be impressed that we went all the way from PA to FL for such a field trip! ) I’m on the space center e-mail list about it. Any advice about how and where to best view it with 11,8,4 and 3 year old children?

That’s even better than the pleasure I used to take in knowing that our small group Bible study was led by a brain surgeon! Yes…really!

Love the joke but I also just love the comments other people leave… brain surgeon!!!

Now see, the joke I would make is “oh honey, when other husbands kiss their wives, all the wives see is fireworks. But when you kiss me, it is like a rocket launch.”….hmmm. equally unfunny I’m sure, but maybe flattering?

Gorgeous picture, too. Will you miss these when you move to Kentucky?

After all the corny jokes Greg’s told over the years, he really should have appreciated that. I know I’d be saying it if I worked there (probably the reason that I’m not a rocket scientist)
We joke at our job that people need to be rocket surgeons to work here (a mix between rocket scientists and brain surgeons) b/c flooring seems to be a very complicated thing to do for some people.

Amy, you’re as bad as I am. My husband is a police officer and whenever people are filling out forms and ask me for his work phone number, I say, “9-1-1.” No one ever thinks it’s as funny as I do.

My dad (chief engineer of Atlas V SRB for Aerojet) has a t-shirt my mother made him several years back. “Actually, I am a Rocket Scientist”
It’s awesome.

ooo! I like the T-shirt idea. Amy, make a T-shirt for Greg that says:
“Actually, it IS rocket science!”
Maybe you’ll squeeze out a chuckle from him with that one!

I am just wondering but how come you only have a picture of two of your kids up on your header?

Husbands can be humor impaired at times. No. Your joke was funny.

Because the person who designed it just chose that picture. I think it’s because there are too many of us to really see in just one small pic.
Greg will, but I won’t–at least, not enough to not go if that makes sense.
The pic is from the launch complex. Nobody’s homes are that close. In fact, the kids and I have never seen Greg’s “office” because it’s “top secret” and all that.
The best place to view a launch is across the river in Titusville.

For one, the images in the header happened to be of a few Amy sent me (the designer) as ideas - I’m the one who chose them. Secondly, I have come to see the whole thing as symbolic of one of Amy & Greg’s long term goals (earthly speaking): “Land, Home, for our Children.” Or something similar thereof.
I am answering this question mainly because I’m glad for the excuse to share the symbolism I see in the header, especially since I haven’t told Amy before now, but have been wanting to.
Otherwise, I doubt anyone would feel particularly obligated to respond to such an unqualified (meaning void of any statements of why it so bothers you) question by a person who finds it so necessary to remain so entirely anonymous. (This last statement is accompanied by an attitude of kindness and not meant to be argumentative, but I am suggesting that the combination of the details of the comment I am responding to does suggest to me an attitude of judgmentalism - which I think is sorely out of place here.)

We were at the Johnson Space Center in Houston a couple of yrs ago and they had T-shirts that said “It’s not rocket science…oh wait, yes it is!”
