House Project: Drywall
Saturday, Mar 22, 2008
We have some magic now. Buzzz, crackle, pop–electricity! The drywall is back up and patched. We are ready for paint. The electric, plumbing, and HVAC are in the walls now, and so we’re ready for the fancy pants stuff: paint, flooring, trim, and cabinets. Yessss.
I forgot to say that we have gutters too.
If you ignore my son’s big head, you can see a good view of the kitchen and dining area below. It is a traditional Amish floorplan. To the right is the large open living room. Amish church services are held from home to home, so the house is built to accommodate this lifestyle. (Benches are typically brought in for the meetings.) My son is standing with his back to the kitchen area with the dining area in front of him. (Yes, that is a toilet. It’s been there for, oh, about two months now.) There is no formal dining room; life happens right near the food, as it should.

I am regretting my choice of red paint now that I see how big this laundry/mud room is. It is 20 x 12, which is bigger than my current 8 x 4 laundry hallway. There is a lot of red paint for the house. I was feeling a little free-spirited when I made my choices.

Not many people get a half bathroom in their basement sewing room, but that’s the way it worked out. Rats, right? Due to the path the plumber had to take, the pipes went right by my sewing room. For just a few dollars, I thought it was a good last minute change.

That’s awesome! I really haven’t been following your house building process, but I know how exciting it can be to see everything come along. We are nearly done remodeling our house and did all the work by ourselves.

Hey, you redesigned your website. I’ve been reading your posts via RSS Feed so I wasn’t even aware of it! I love the new look!

I love open styled houses! I love our very large 140+ year old house but that is the one thing I don’t like- the rooms are very choppy! I guess you can’t have everything.

That bathroom in the sewing room will be wonderful! No traipsing upstairs and getting lost with some other project just to go to the bathroom!
Can’t wait to see it IRL.

A bathroom attached to a craft room? GENIUS!
I’d bet that a million craft projects have met their untimely end by one fateful trip to the bathroom on the other side of the house.
No sooner have you left your creative space, then you say “just one load of laundry” or the phone rings, or a kid needs his nose wiped.
Now all you need is a microwave and we’ll never read another blog post again—you’ll be too busy catching up on all those abandoned quilt projects! LOL!

Red …. I love red. In fact, my family room is painted red but only 2 walls … the other 2 are painted linen. Your new place is going to be terrific.

ok, I’m jealous - a 12′x20′laundry/mud room! I’d put in walls of clothing racks and shelves and make it one big family clothes closet
You’ll enjoy having a big mud room on a farm with kids running in and out. I’m a designer, so red will make the room feel not too large. Enjoy.

Will you still have a red front door? (no, I haven’t seen in it in person–I remember the red front door post….)
It’s all so exciting?

Hope you had a lovely Easter!

We live in an 1860’s farm house and I would LOVE to be able to do what y’all are doing!

Oh my, that post is like three-years-old! I don’t remember what we told him about the front door. I saw an unpainted picture of it; I don’t think they’ve painted it yet but they haven’t asked about it either. (?)
That was a long way to say, “I don’t know!”

I assume you’ve already bought the paint, so you’re stuck with a red laundry room. But you could mix it with white and have pink, which would be less overwhelming. Just a thought.

Wow! You get to have a laundry room? Sounds like it will be the size of garage (maybe bigger).
With red you’ll be so energized to get the laundry done zip-zip-zippety like.

Doh! That’s what I get for trying to be funny.
Sigh.
I meant that your laundry room might be as big or bigger than my garage.
