The beautiful thing about getting a basement

They will be able to tiff amongst themselves outside of my earshot.
I will stop twitching and my nerves will rest. It will be lover-ly.

You know, you’ll have to stop joking about locking them in the basement now that you’ll have one. =)

And, according to my children, your basement (well, the whole house really) is a great place to play hide and go seek.

We moved into a big house in May…the kids have a play room…I twitch no more!

Duuuuuude. What I would give for a basement. We don’t have houses with basements in CA.–for the most part. I wonder why we Californians so much $$ for houses without twitch-free zones?

You mean you don’t discipline your children? HAHA joke. i had to say it.

It’s nice though, right, as far as basements go? It has windows and light and a nice BIG LOCK….?
Comment by Amy Scott (July 10, 2008 @ 9:46 pm )
The real question is, though, is there a window to slide food in there from the kitchen?

Look at all that space! Wow, what a great room to have!

Oh, a basement. A place to hide all electronic toys and other things that make this mom twitch. A giant room with a door to hide all the junk when company comes. A room that nobody will feel slighted if they never get to see when they come over. A basement…

I wish I had a basement. I have 3 kids-7, 5, and 5 mo. and would love for the older ones to play in it. This is the first time I have left a comment. I have been trying to read all of your posts, but with 3 kids it is hard, but I will get there eventually. You are so inspiring, Amy, and make me want to have more children. I’ve always kind od kidded, but a little serious, too, with my husband, that I want 12 kids-1 for each month of the year! January, April, and December are covered. I have 9 more to go!!
With you and some of the others talking about how it is a breeze after #3, it has really encouraged me, though I don’t know if I will go to the extreme of 12. When it comes down to the last 2 or 3, I will have to time it just right to make the right month.

You’ll love your basement until the first time it floods. Sorry, I had to say it. Some basements don’t flood. The basement at our current house hasn’t flooded…yet.
Just kidding with you. Sort of.

Cassie, I wouldn’t say 3+ kids is a breeze. Let’s just say that there is never a dull moment.
The challenges come faster and can be unrelenting. But the up side is that there is plenty of laughing, fun, and watching the wonder of children growing up. (That is if you can clear the clutter, dishes and laundry away enough to see them!–firmly insert tongue in cheek.) Have more, enjoy them and don’t let the chores get you down!
Dreamer, wet basements are fun aren’t they?

I can’t say our basement won’t flood, but it hasn’t yet in the year we’ve owned it. Too, it doesn’t even seem damp at all. Just in case, though, we painted the cement floors instead of laying down hardwood, carpet, or laminate.
Comment by Amy Scott (July 12, 2008 @ 1:50 pm )
Hmm. It’d have to be a chute.
We’re thinking about putting an extra fridge in there (to store extra milk from animals…thinking positive here). Then they really could stay down there, eh?
Comment by Amy Scott (July 12, 2008 @ 1:53 pm )
Oh Amy, leave the logistics up to you!
A chute is perfect! But a dumbwaiter even better!!

I like this. We got our child a shed, a big one! It is insulated and has electricity and lights.
Our home is quite small so we decided that this would be a long term investment, he can use it until he is well into his teenage years. I joke and tell him that when he gets married it stays here and we will put a sauna in it!
Short term, it got all his toys out from under my feet. Best €3,000.00 we EVER spent!

How in the world do you put a basement into an already built house?
If I had a basement like that, I’d reserve about 1/4 of it for outside games that have to be brought indoors, like hopscotch and maybe a place to jumprope in place, etc…
another 1/4 of it would be for crafts like glitter and then have a drain in the floor where you could just wash all the mess away!!
———-
The only drawback is kids having friends over… if they are waaay down in the basement you can’t eavesdrop while they think you are just folding laundry!
Comment by Jenny (July 21, 2008 @ 11:04 pm )
Jenny, The basement was already there.
We dried it in, as it was unfinished when we bought it. As for eavesdropping, well, my husband designed an AV closet that will house video cameras.
No joke! Remember, this is the same guy who wants to automate the livestock and orchards, so a little feed in the basement is nothin’! He is a programmer with too many spare parts lying around.

I think the best part is that now you have a place to go during scary weather. I’ve never understood how people can live in hurricane country with no basement to hide in. But yes, it looks nice. Huge!
